Community residents may bring old flags to be properly disposed of, with honor, on Flag Day.
BARTLETT, TENN.–Saint Francis Hospital-Bartlett will hold a brief patriotic ceremony on June 14 – Flag Day – during which the hospital will lower its old U.S. flag and replace it with a new one. Community residents are encouraged to bring their old flags to the event where a local Boy Scouts of America troop will ensure they are properly disposed of, with honor.
The event will start at 10 a.m. at the flagpole near the hospital’s main entrance, 2985 Kate Bond Road in Bartlett.
“We welcome members of our community to join us for this ceremony and to bring with them any old, worn-out U.S. flags that they wish to dispose of, so that they can be properly retired, with the full honors to which these proud symbols of our great nation are entitled,” said Sherwin Stewart, CEO of Saint Francis-Bartlett.
U.S. flags that are deemed to be no longer serviceable are burned following a dignified patriotic ceremony.
Flag Day is observed nationally every June 14 to commemorate the adoption of the U.S. flag on June 14, 1777 by the Second Continental Congress. It was celebrated as a patriotic occasion for many decades, but President Woodrow Wilson made the observance official on May 30, 1916, by a presidential proclamation. Today, Flag Day is celebrated by veterans’ groups, schools, and organizations like the National Flag Day Foundation whose goal is to preserve the traditions, history, pride, and respect that are due to Old Glory.
