Special to The Bartlett Express
Even as the colors of summer foliage were on display at the Memphis Botanic Garden, local artists from the Bartlett Art Association (BAA) added to that beauty with a show of their works during the kickoff of the BAA’s annual Summer Artist Spotlight exhibit Sunday, June 5.
The show, featuring 44 pieces from member artists, runs through July 1 at the Memphis Botanic Garden visitors center located at 750 Cherry Road in Memphis.
Visitors to the exhibit will be treated to works created using traditional media such as oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, and ink as well as digital creations and fine art photographs.
“We’ve held to our tradition of showcasing art made in a variety of techniques,” said Carol Caughey, president of the BAA. “The colors in this show are outstanding.”
BAA members gathered on Sunday for the opening reception at Fratelli’s Cafe located in the Garden’s atrium, which was bustling with people who were anxious to take advantage of the sunny day.
“I’m sure everyone who comes to the exhibit will find something intriguing, inspiring, and meaningful in the lovely collection,” said Monique Green, who is coordinating the exhibit for the BAA.
The Summer Artist Spotlight is one of two exhibits the BAA puts on annually in larger spaces outside of Bartlett. The second such exhibit is generally held at WKNO’s Gallery 1091, but has been put on virtually for the last couple of years due to COVID restrictions on public gatherings.
The work of BAA members can also be seen year-round in BAA-sponsored exhibitions such as the rotating exhibit at the Atrium Gallery of Saint Francis Hospital-Bartlett (between the medical building on Kate Bond Road and the main hospital).
Featured artists in this year’s Summer Artist Spotlight include Ann Brown Thomason, Carol Caughey, Connie Lampen, Joe Umphress, Barbara Hicks, Katie Lindsey, Marc Wheetley, Elizabeth Velazquez, Monique Green, Sandy Bradley, Sheila C. Bentley, Jacque’ Sligh, Linda Umphress, Jean Wheeler, Carol Pollard, Faten Hassouneh, AG Howard, Angela Howard, Jon Woodhams, Frederick Lyle Morris, Vickey Smith, Carol Combs, Nancy Simmons, Vladimir Drobashevsky and Rick Durand.
The Bartlett Art Association is a nonprofit organization chartered in 1988 to encourage, educate, improve, exhibit, and support fine art in Bartlett and the surrounding areas.
