City Employees recognized for quick thinking that helped to save lives

On June 25, Kaylee Banton was in the Singleton Gymnasium overseeing her summer camp group. She was talking with all the campers when one camper approached her and seemed upset. She quickly noticed that he was in distress and was in fact choking. After assessing the camper, Kaylee immediately started doing the Heimlich maneuver without hesitation. She then did a back thrust and the medium sized bead the camper had swallowed came out. The camper was perfectly fine afterwards and everyone, including his parents, were very thankful. Kaylee’s quick reaction time truly made a huge difference in this situation. She never panicked or froze in fear. She took the first aid and safety training she has gone through and immediately put it into action as she was taught. We are so thankful for her bravery and quick thinking!
After summer camp, Kaylee will return to Singleton Preschool in her role as Assistant Preschool Teacher. We are so glad she is a part of our team!
On July 6th, a badminton player finished his game in the Singleton Gymnasium and walked to get some water. As he went to walk back to the court he collapsed on the floor and was unconscious.
Celestine immediately ran over to him to assess the situation. Realizing that it was dire, she asked another player to call 911 and she went to begin CPR. At the same time, another badminton player who was a doctor ran over and started CPR instead. Celestine then took on the role of making sure the AED and other supplies were gathered. She also made sure she was communicating with her Manager on Duty along with other staff members and Singleton participants on what to do next. She truly took charge and made sure everyone knew what to do and made sure the EMT/Paramedics/Police knew where to go when they arrived.
The next day, she was able to visit this individual in the hospital and found out that he had a massive heart attack but was expected to recover over time.
Thanks to Celestine’s quick reaction time and her dedication to serve and take charge, everyone was able to assist this individual and save his life. His life was truly on the line and Celestine never flinched. She took the training she has received and put it quickly into action without hesitation. Celestine is a huge asset to our team and we are so thankful for her heroic efforts on July 6th!
