TSWA nominates athletes for All-State football team

Members of the Tennessee Sports Writers Association throughout the state made nominations for all-state football teams. They were selected during the Blue Cross Bowl state championship weekend and will be released at the end of December.

Nominations from The Bartlett Express are from games covered during the 2018 season and with only a few exceptions came from coaches. Statistical information was provided by coaches.

1. Spencer Smith, St. George’s, Division 2-AA, Quarterback, Senior, passed for 2,500 yards, 31 touchdowns, 4 interceptions. First-team all-region. Offensive Player of the Year in region. Playing in the Auto Zone Liberty Bowl All-Star game.

2. Chandler Caughron, Evangelical Christian School, Division 2-AA, Placekicker, Punter, Senior, 6 of 9 field goals with longest of 44 yards. Made 38 of 41 extra points, 40 touchbacks (75 percent), 33.9 average punting with 6 inside the 20. First-team all-region. Scholarship offer to play at the University of Central Arkansas. Playing in Auto Zone Liberty Bowl All-Star game.

8. Rube Scott Rhea, Fayette Academy, Division 2-A, Quarterback, Junior, Mr. Football Finalist. Passed for 1,264 yards, threw 17 touchdowns, rushed for 1,166 yards, ran for 14 touchdowns, 39 tackles, 2 interceptions, Athlete of the Year in region. First-team all-region. Led team to 10-2 record.

9. Will Rhea, Fayette Academy, Division 2-A, corner back, Senior, 468 all-purpose yards, 47 tackles, 2 interceptions, 11 pass break-ups, 1 fumble recovery. First-team all-region. Playing in West Tennessee All-Star game.

10. Ryan Parks, Fayette Academy, Division 2-A, Wide Receiver, Junior, 24 receptions for 499 yards, 6 touchdowns. First-team all-region.

18. Shomar Michael, Germantown, Region 8-6A, Linebacker, Senior, 65 tackles, 12 sacks, 18 tackles for loss, 3 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 1 interception, 1 safety. Second-team all-region. Playing in the Toyota East-West All-Star game.

19. Trey Boyd, Germantown, Region 8-6A, Noseguard, Senior, 68 tackles, 11 sacks, 25 tackles for loss. First-team all-region.

20. Ethan Payne, Germantown, Region 8-6A, Quarterback, Senior, passed for 1,980 yards, 18 touchdowns, completed 168 of 263, 7 interceptions. First-team all-region quarterback. Led team to 20-0 regular season as starter, first time in school history. Committed to Tennessee to play baseball.

21. Cameron Baker, Germantown, Region 8-6A, Wide Receiver, Senior, 84 receptions for 1,127 yards, 10 touchdowns, 2 rushing touchdowns. First-team all-region. Region Offensive Player of the Year. Playing in Toyota East-West All-Star game. Committed to Memphis.

22. Conner Richardson, Germantown, Region 8-6A, Fullback, Senior. 33 receptions for 330 yards, 4 touchdowns. First-team all-region. Playing in Toyota East-West All-Star game tight end. Committed to Tulane.

23. Marshall Ware, Germantown, Region 8-6A, Punter, Placekicker, Senior. Mr. Football Semi-Finalist. Was 65 of 75 on touchbacks, 61 of 63 PATS, 3 of 4 field goals. Punting average was 37.5. First-team all-region. Straight-A student, WATN Scholar-Athlete of the Month. Playing in Auto Zone Liberty Bowl All-Star game.

24. Lincoln Pare, Houston, Region 7-6A, Running Back, Junior, Rushed for 2,143 yards, scored 31 touchdowns. Runs 40 in 4.50 seconds. First-team all-region. Region Offensive Player of the Year. Led team to region championship, first in school history and advanced to second round of playoffs before losing to Whitehaven. Finished 10-2.

25. Chris Colebank, Houston, Region 7-6A, Outside linebacker, Senior, 42 tackles, 4 sacks, 5 tackles for loss, recovered 1 fumble for touchdown, rushed for 450 yards on 61 carries, scored 5 rushing touchdowns. Runs 40 in 4.53 seconds. Has interest from Harding University, Mississippi College. Was team’s leading rusher last season but went to mostly defense this season. Honorable mention all-region. Epitome of team player. Houston coach James Thomas said, “I can’t say enough about the role that Chris played. We had a need and he was a perfect fit. He said, ‘Great, I want to help the team win.’ He got better every week and did a great job.”

26. Kip Frankland, Houston, Region 7-6A, Offensive lineman, defensive lineman, Senior, graded out at 97 percent run blocking for the year, 44 pancakes, 99 percent pass blocking. On defensive line he had 27 solo tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 1 fumble recovery for touchdown, 4-year varsity starter. Captain. Houston coach James Thomas called him the “most athletic and explosive lineman” he has coached in his 15 years. Played all-positions of the line at one time.
