Lakeland’s middle school, slated to break ground May 26, will have its principal in place a year before classes begin so he can be involved in preparing for the new school’s launch.

Lakeland School System superintendent Dr. Ted Horrell has announced the selection of Matt Adler as the founding principal of Lakeland Middle Preparatory School.

A resident of Lakeland, Adler is currently vice-principal of Bolton High School, where he previously served as the coordinator of the school’s International Baccalaureate Program, a Master Teacher, and chairman of the science department, where he taught standard, honors, and Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry.

He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina and has earned master’s degrees in educational leadership and in curriculum and instruction.

Horrell said Adler impressed the principal selection committee with his combination of experience, warmth and commitment to student success.

“I believe Mr. Adler’s skill set and personality will be a great fit for the kind of culture we intend to build at Lakeland Middle Preparatory School,” Horrell said.

Adler said, “Developing a school that continues the exemplary standard set forth by Lakeland Elementary School is one of my top priorities as LMPS principal.”

He will begin work for Lakeland School System on July 1 and will have more than one year to prepare for the opening of the new school for students in grades 5-8.

The school, which will be located north of Highway 70 and east of Canada Road, will open in August 2017.
