Honor a vet: Special events to celebrate their service

dogtagsSupporters of the U.S. military and all the men and women who serve in it will have plenty of opportunities to pay tribute this week and next.

The following Veterans Day events have been announced:

  • saluteLakeland Elementary School is hosting a special observance Nov. 6 that includes a guest speaker, glee club performers, a parade through the subdivision and a picnic. Events will be at 9:30 a.m. for grades 3-5 and 15 11:30 a.m. for grades K-2. The school is at 10050 Oak Seed Lane, Lakeland.
  • The Bartlett Community Concert Band (BCCB) will perform Nov. 8 at the National Cemetery (3568 Townes Ave., Memphis) as part of the annual Veterans Day Ceremony.  The band begins performing at 1:40 p.m., and the ceremony will begin at 2 p.m.
  • Town of Arlington: The celebration honoring veterans will be at 3 p.m. Nov. 8 at Historic Depot Square. There will be guest speakers and the middle school band will perform. Click here to see a map showing the boundaries of the Historic Depot Square.
  • Bon Lin Elementary School will host a program in honor of veterans at 9:30 a.m. and again at 10:15 a.m. Nov. 9 in the gym. The school is at 3940 N. Germantown Road, Bartlett.
  • Arlington Middle School is hosting a special program in honor of Veterans Day, and all military parents are invited to attend. The event will be Nov. 10 at the school, starting at 9:15 a.m. for grades 7-8 and at 10:25 a.m. for grade 6. The guest speaker will be 1st Lt. (Ret.) Bryan Hayes, who is also a former teacher at AMS and is now a writing/recording artist. Special music will be provided by the AMS band, chorus and orchestra.   • Bartlett Elementary School will host a program in the gym to honor military veterans at 9:45 a.m. Nov. 10. The Bartlett High School Band will perform. The veterans related to students will be attending, and a video of these veterans will be played during the program. Breakfasts will be served to the veterans before the program. The school is at 3932 Billy Maher Road, Bartlett.
  • Ellendale Elementary School will host a Veterans Day Lunch on Nov. 10. Veterans and active-duty military are invited to attend and eat lunch with their child/family member during the scheduled lunch time. A special adult lunch will be offered. The school is at 6950 Dawnhill Road, Bartlett.
  • Rivercrest Elementary School’s fifth-grade classes will have a Veterans Day Program at 8:30 a.m. and 9:20 a.m. Nov. 10. The school is at 4825 Rivercrest Lane, Bartlett.
  • City of Bartlett: The annual observance wil be at 10 a.m. Nov. 11 at the city’s Veterans Park, found adjacent to W.J. Freeman Park at the corner of Bartlett Boulevard and Bartlett Road. The Appling Middle School Band will be part of the program.”
  • Appling Middle School is hosting a Heroes for Heroes luncheon on Nov. 12. The school is at 3700 Appling Road, Bartlett. For more information, call the school at (901) 373-1410.
