The Shelby County Board of Education approved an ordinance Monday night allowing Bartlett to negotiate a 40-year lease for the 11 school buildings within the city.
The Altruria Elementary, Appling Middle, Bartlett Elementary, Bartlett High, Bon Lin Elementary, Bon Lin Middle, Ellendale Elementary, Elmore Park Middle, Oak Elementary, Rivercrest Elementary and Shadowlawn Elementary school buildings will be leased for 40 years contingent upon the agreement of the Bartlett School Board to pay the Shelby County Board of Education a negotiated sum which will assist in offsetting the health and life insurance costs associated with already retired employees of the SCBE and “other costs associated with the formation of municipal school districts.”
The lease will require that the Bartlett School Board be responsible for the cost of all maintenance and repair of the properties. The lease will also provide that Bartlett will indemnify the Shelby County Board of Education for all lawsuits and claims of any kind arising from or pertaining to the lease of school buildings. If at any time during the term of the lease the properties cease to be used for the education of K-12 students, the lease will be terminated.
Arlington and Lakeland will also be given the opportunity to negotiate for their five school buildings, which include Arlington Middle, Arlington High, Donelson Elementary, Arlington Elementary and Lakeland Elementary.
